This little train is exactly that kind of thing.

Small, cheerful, with round windows like a toy locomotive — it looks as if it might puff steam at any moment and chug along imaginary tracks straight under the Christmas tree. There are roses that need no introduction. Just Joey is one of them. A legendary variety bred back in the 1970s, it remains one of the world's most beloved orange-apricot roses to this day. Its petals seem to glow from within, shimmering with warm honeyed tones, edged with the faintest hint of rust—as if kissed by a setting sun.

And now, this rose has found its way onto my hoop.

I'm working from a design by Véronique Enginger, from her "Botanica" series. A French designer whose name has long been a mark of quality for those who love to stitch flowers. Her botanical roses are not mere images—they are true portraits. Full of character, rich in mood, precise enough for a herbarium, yet imbued with that elusive artistry that transforms embroidery into art.

Émile Munier painted his angels and children in soft pastels—pinks, blues, golds. But I wanted to take this cupid elsewhere, into another era. To keep his form, his touchingly chubby cheeks, his naive gaze—but to strip away colour, to immerse him in an old photograph, a vintage postcard faded just enough to become even more beautiful.

The "Alice" kit offered only the brown range. Sepia. No pink, no blue—only noble earthy tones, softly melting from light into shadow.

The technique is petit point. In monochrome, it reveals itself most fully. Without colour, there is nowhere to hide behind brightness—only stitch, only texture, only precision. And here, every millimetre works: the dense surface of fine half-cross stitch creates an impeccably smooth field across which light glides, emphasising volume.

The size is 13 by 18 cm—intimate, almost like a locket. The kind of work you want to hold in your hands, place on a writing desk, carry with you when you move. They take up little space, but they take up much heart.

There are certain scents that transport you instantly to another place. The fragrance of lemon groves, sun-warmed earth, sea breeze mingling with citrus. I breathed it in once, in Italy — and it has stayed with me forever.

When I saw this butterfly, Italy came back.

The rich yet luminous tones of a Mediterranean landscape — a wing of deepest blue, the bright yellow of lemons, that particular green you only find in the south in July. There was so much serenity in this combination, so much sunlight, that I simply could not walk away.
And so this piece was born.

The embroidery follows the original "Fairy's Secret Garden" design by WildBluebell Stitch. But I allowed myself one small liberty: I chose a sage-coloured cotton canvas. That soft, muted greenish-grey became the perfect backdrop for the lemons and the butterfly — not competing with their brightness, but enhancing it, adding air and depth.

I thought long and hard about how to present it. I considered options, tried on frames, searched for that "just right" setting. And in the end, I decided to do something unusual for me — I chose a square wooden base with a round opening.

Why this choice? It seemed to me that a round window peeking out from a strict square creates that sense of intimacy, that effect of "glimpsing" into someone else's garden, where a bird has paused on a branch by the birdhouse. As if you're looking through an old viewfinder or into the tiny window of a forest lodge.

The box is painted in an antique white shade — noble, slightly warm, hinting at sun-bleached wood. Finished with furniture wax, the surface remains pleasant to touch, alive, without the cold film of varnish.

Two years ago, Buba came into my life. A Egyptian Mau mix — the most affectionate of all my pets. One of those cases where love arrives without warning and stays forever.

And then one day, while scrolling through my feed, I saw HIM. The Mau design by BananiStitchery. The process was wonderfully pleasant — meditative, warm, fulfilling. But because of the natural linen canvas, I decided not to stitch the background completely. I left it "breathing," natural, to emphasize the graphic quality of the portrait itself. It seemed to me that this way, the Mau would look even more alive — as if he had just stepped out of the shadows and paused, waiting.

And you know, the result exceeded my expectations.

The portrait turned out so alive, it takes your breath away. Those eyes — there truly is depth in them. That fur — you feel you could run your finger over it and sense its softness. That turn of the head — as if the Mau might glance back at you at any moment.

I took a long time choosing the framing. I considered options, tried on frames, searched for the one that wouldn't compete for attention but would dignify the work. In the end, I settled on a miniature brass frame with a 6 by 8 centimetre window. Delicate metal, noble gleam, elegant profile — it became the perfect setting for the Mau.

There are works that wait for their moment. They lie in a box with a bewildered question: "When?" — and you look at them and understand: not now. Not ready. Haven't matured. Haven't accumulated that inner resource needed to take on something truly important.

This Emma Congdon design sat with me for three years.
Back then, when I first saw the pattern, I thought: "This is incredibly labour-intensive. Too many shades, too many details, too much pink." And I set it aside. With a clear conscience and the thought: "Someday."

That "someday" arrived now.

And you know, I've never once regretted waiting. Because the me of three years ago simply couldn't have done this work justice. I wouldn't have had enough patience, enough experience, that particular love for the process that only comes with years.

The work uses an enormous number of pink shades — from the most delicate watercolour to deep, saturated tones. They flow into one another, creating volume and that particular airiness we love in Emma Congdon's designs. And the border… the border is a story in itself. I worked it in rug embroidery technique, transforming it into a fluffy little cloud you want to touch with your fingers. It's soft, dimensional, almost alive — and contrasts so beautifully with the smooth surface of the embroidery itself.

The acacia wood box (19 cm in diameter) is toned with white wax. Not covering the wood's texture, but lightly whitewashing it, adding that particular "worn" quality that turns a new object into a vintage treasure.

The result is a truly interesting and unique piece. Not just a box, not just embroidery — but a statement. About how it's never too late to open your heart to new adventures. Even if the preparation took three years.

On the eve of Old New Year, I long to be enveloped in magic. For snow to fall outside the window, for the house to smell of pine, and for my heart to feel light and festive — even if the holidays have officially ended.

Today, snow fell. Yes, it's wet and heavy, and it will probably melt soon, barely having settled on the ground. But I still gazed out the window and felt such pure, almost childlike joy ❄️

And on my table — this box. The moon and fir branches, embroidered from a WildBluebell Stitch design on black linen canvas.

The black background here is not merely a backdrop. It is the deep winter night, in which silver needles glow and the moon burns with cold radiance. The petit point technique creates incredible contrast: light stitches literally flash against the dark velvet of the canvas, like moonlight breaking through dense branches.
